Topic Stats. 4 posts; 3 Pinsiders participating; Latest reply 1 hour ago by bikefreak; Sep 05, 2018 · If your system has both heating and cooling functions, you'll need to connect both the Rc and Rh terminals with a red wire. Because many thermostats come with a pre-installed thermostat jumper wire that connects these terminals, you only need one red wire, which could be the thermostat Rc wire or the Rh wire. If this jumper wire isn't present, you can install one yourself. If you don't, you'll need two red wires so you can connect each terminal separately to the system transformer. Your old thermostat may have a jumper wire connecting one terminal to another. It may look like a small staple or a colored wire. Use a screwdriver or press a lever to release wires from terminals and remove the jumper wire. Other models, like the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Honeywell Lyric can use a C wire, but they don't require it. If your HVAC system doesn't have a C wire, these thermostats and others instead ...

Jumpering W and Y is common for stats not specifically designed for heatpumps, but will only work for a unit such as yours. (Whenever there's a call for heat on the W wire, the jumper turns the compressor 'Y' on). This obviously would not work for a unit where the reversing valve would need to be de-energized for heat mode.

A C-wire is a low voltage power wire that many modern thermostats require for their features to work. Many older homes don’t have a C-wire because mercury and battery-powered thermostats didn’t require one. Therefore, it is important that you make sure your HVAC system is compatible with Emerson's thermostat.
